Cape Weligama is still new ( launched in Oct. 2014) yet in no time rose up to be the pride of the south coast in Weligama. It is the sister property of Tea Trails in Hatton.
Perched on a cliff overlooking the sea, Cape Weligama by all means a luxury boutique resorts sprawling across a 12 acres manicured land. You will need a buggy to transfer you from the reception to your chalet.
For all that space there are only 40 chalets creating ample space and privacy. It rise 36m above the sea bringing unbeatable views of the whole of south-coast.
Many of our clients at Tropical Vacations were spoilt with its indulgences marking it as one of their highlights with no surprise.
Our visit there was some time ago but let me share our own experience in the grand resort of the Resplendent Ceylon resort chain.
Cape Weligama is designed with such attention to detail bringing in great expertise. As I recall this involved great design experts from Thailand amongst others. Perhaps, Its prestigious sister property Tea Trails brought its influence to build it in this way, as the Cape Weligama creates a surreal experience.
Its infinity pool was recently selected as one of the ‘top ten infinity pools of the world’ by Conde Nast’ Travelers the leading luxury travel magazine with no surprise. Any guests who make there way, will find the pool area and the restaurant at the edge of the cliff to be a highlight.
To add some thought to the infinity sea view, the sea water at Weligama churns uninterruptedly all the way to Antarctica.
The chalets are quite spacious, smallest is 130sqm will give you an insight of the space. All chalets have your own private pool, most of them overlooking the sea. You could simply, slide the doors and dip in the pool sipping a cocktail served at your room!
The accommodation by default comes with a tempting half board plus. It offers you Bed tea, full English or Sri Lankan breakfast, dinner, one mini bar fill per stay, traditional afternoon cream tea (scones, clotted cream, jams, cakes, sandwiches), tea & coffee. The discounted rates from us also includes a selected activity of the day as well. Whale watching on a private boat, PADI diving or a cycling are available at the resort.
The ‘Kumbuk’ restaurant which offers Sri Lankan cuisine could easily win the hearts of many. Being a member of the Relais’ & Châteaux rest assures impeccable quality in all meals Cape Weligama serves. One of the unique characters to mention is their Japanese sushi kitchen. It too overlooks the ocean. The resort also organize a ‘fish market’ day on Friday ( if I recall correctly) and you get to taste the fresh catches from the sea.
Although once you check-in you will be wrapped with its luxuries and stay in, The resort’s location has plenty to offer. It is the premier location for Whale watching, and is only 30 mins drive away from the UNESCO World Heritage site Galle Fort. Snorkeling, Surfing are also among other most popular activities in the coast of Weligama.
I must thank the resort manager Suneth, for his cooperation and his time spent with us.
Two more luxury resorts ( I’m certain these will join the Relais & chateaux as well and be super expensive) coming up in Trincomalee and in Yala. It is a great news for those who love the best of the luxury accommodation as you can rest assure that they will not only invest to build the best of the designs but also bring a service that is distinctly different and standout from the rest of the island.
In comparison, Indira would still prefer Tea Trails for its intimate ambience while I, was drawn in to Cape Weligama’s unique location. The fact that I am a lover of cliffs overlooking the sea, Cape Weligama, sets a heavenly picture for me. If there are any downsides, that has to be it’s size, for those who prefer small boutique resorts. Also if you are a fan of the sound of the sea and beach access right across your room, this isn’t the one for you.
But as we recommend, stay of few days in Cape Weligama to taste its sheer luxury and continue your beach stay in another sea level resort would be an absolute dream getaway for any beach lover.
Cape Weligama is featured on our Resplendent Ceylon Tea & Sea itinerary.
